Old Assignment: How to get Inspiration When you feel Lost

  1. Look at your favorite artist or those renowned for their artistry and take a few points from them. Don’t copy them just find ideas.
  2. If you have been stuck with the same style, try to look at other photo styles and try them yourself.
  3. Take pictures with other people. Instead of going on a solo journey try different perspectives by taking pictures with others and you can bounce off ideas.
  4. After some time of taking pictures, you can forget what you have previously done. Go back and look at the images you have taken, maybe inspiration can be found in your old work.
  5. Practice your editing skills. With the new options always coming out to change photos you should always relearn your software and find quicker easier ways of editing photos.

Old Assignment: White Balance Read and Write

White balancing helps focus the lens into blocking out color spectrums and producing the realistic lighting most photographers strive for. Without white balancing the image will be tainted with usually blue or yellow lights. Unless the photo needs a certain mood or filter to go with it, white balancing will help fix the image.

In camera white balance is good for room that has consistent lighting. As soon as lighting changes in the area you have to reset the white balance.

White balancing while editing is simple to do but is an individual process especially if each photo has different lighting which will cause you to set aside time to get every white balance right.

White balance using presets is an easy process that is quick although it isn’t 100% accurate and can be less accurate depending on the conditions.

Old Assignment: Introduction to Using Strobe Lights

  1. Look for three categories when finding the right strobes: the light sources themselves, modifiers that control the spread of light, and grips or stands that support the lights.
  2. Professional studio light sources generally fall into one of two categories: you can get a kit with a flash head and a power pack, or you can get a moonlight kit.
  3. Head and Power packs are typically bulkier needed a large battery while the moonlight is a tinier more flexible option with the downside of having less power.
  4. Head and power packs battery is separate to the pack, and the moonlight is typically in the light itself.
  5. Head pack are better options for shooting outside in the bright sun. They provide enough power to overpower the sun for the image.
  6. Reflecting umbrellas are considered a light modifier and help soften the bright light into a wider area.
  7. There are 3 types of umbrellas. The white umbrella gives off the widest spread of light, Gold umbrellas give the light a warm tone, and the silver lined umbrella focus the light.
  8. Soft boxes are other light modifiers that contrary to the reflecting umbrella focus more on one area instead of a wider zone.
  9. Some other light modifiers include: Snoot and Barn Doors, Flash Head Reflectors, Flag, and Honeycomb Grids.
  10. Grips and Stands are used to support light sources, light modifiers, or backdrops.

Old Assignment: File Formats

  • JPEG: Saves images by compressing data at capture—reducing detail for extra small file sizes and universal compatibility, a simple option for photos and sharing.
  • HEIF: Utilizes advanced compression to store images at high quality in even smaller sizes than JPEGs, Good for smaller images with the downside of not being usable universally for every format.
  • TIFF: Often saved without compression to preserve every bit of image detail, Great for editing and keeping detail with the expense of huge file sizes.
  • RAW: Captures all sensor data without immediate compression, Great for editing options and details but requiring specialized software for viewing.
  • DNG: A standardized version of RAW created by Adobe that converts proprietary RAW files into a uniform format, ensures that the photo can be viewed with more software but requiring an extra step.
  • PNG: Uses lossless compression so that image quality and details (including transparency) are maintained, Good for digital photos but increasing the file size.
  • GIF: Employs lossless compression with support for simple animation and binary transparency, this means it’s great for moving graphics and animations but with limited colors.
  • BMP: Saves uncompressed, pixel-by-pixel data to produce high-quality images ideal for printing, this makes the image unusable for digital use and making a huge file size.
  • PSD: Stores images with all Photoshop layers intact to allow for non-destructive editing and flexible revisions, it creates large files in order to be able to change and fix any images.

Old Assignment: Letter to Next Years Photos Students

Photography

Mrs. Cauchon

P.6

Letter to Yn’s

Photography class can be very easy. The assignments are simple and can usually be done in the same day. One thing to look out for is to fall behind any assignments as if you fall behind the assignments can pile up quickly. One assignment that was due a week ago can turn into four.  Most assignments have a component of needing another person or multiple people so making friends is important for sure.

Photography takes a bit of imagination. Obviously, a class about taking pictures does use some thought but being in the same school the whole year you must start thinking about every angle you could possibly get. School probably won’t change so start getting used to it. Subtle changes to photos can always make the difference like lighting and depth.

Editing is a big factor in the image, it can bring out qualities that can’t be accomplished in a real photo. It can also make imperfections in the photo disappear. If your unhappy with a photo it can fix it real quick. So, getting used to editing will be a big help. Good Luck.

Old Assignment: Favorite Teacher

No disrespect to other teachers but I think Ms. Makkawi is my favorite teacher. I think the ability to make physiology an somewhat easy class and something that is fun, it’s great. Especially for a class that can get really boring, and you do need to pay attention to stay ahead of the topics.

I appreciate the unwillingness to shy away from any topics. Especially talking about the anatomy can feel uncomfortable or weird but Ms. Makkawi just makes light jokes and breezes straight through the topic while making sure we understand how everything functions. Sometimes she even gives us fun facts- you know whether I wanted to know them or not- is kind of beside the point, I know them now. And it never hurt to know something.

Ms. Makkawi also does things that I find refreshing. Like if I am behind on assignments, she will remind me that I can still get my grades up if I focus on future assignments that may be more of importance or has more points associated with them. She tells me I am behind but doesn’t bash me over the head with it and she gives me hope by telling me I could still increase my grade.

Old Assignment: Flash Worksheet

External flash bounce off light and makes it soft. We use flash in the dark and also use flash outside to get rid of shadows.

Metering is not important when using the flash

the hot shoot

camera syncs to flash

ETTl means through the lens meter

camera syncs at 200. So do not use anything above 200 in the sync. This will leave half the photo blacked.

makes the light soft

a system that would make other flashes go off during a shot

changing your aperture when you need lighting to come in more or less.
